Wang Tianyi (王天一; born 23 April 1989) is a Chinese xiangqi player who held first place on the sport's domestic rating list (等级分) for a decade and won the national men's individual championship four times, the world men's individual championship three times and the Asian individual championship once.[2][12][10][13] He first reached No. 1 in the Chinese rating list in the list published on 1 January 2014, and in the list with the 31 May 2023 cutoff he became the first player to be officially rated above 2800, at 2802.[6][7][14]

His career ended with the "recording gate" (录音门) match-fixing affair: the Chinese Xiangqi Association (中国象棋协会) banned him for life in September 2024 and revoked the technical titles it had awarded him,[15][4] and in September 2025 he was one of six grandmasters convicted of bribery in Hangzhou.[16][17] He apologised publicly on 21 October 2025.[1]

Wang was born and raised in Beijing. He learned xiangqi at a district children's palace and won national junior titles before studying at Peking University and joining the professional league as a student, and he took his first national championship in October 2012, at the age of 23.[18][3] From that breakthrough to the end of his career his principal rival was Zheng Weitong (郑惟桐), who stayed closest to him in the ratings.[19][20] He was also among the sport's most visible commercial figures, streaming on Huya and selling instructional courses.[21][22]

Early life and education

Wang Tianyi was born in Beijing on 23 April 1989.[2] Both of his parents were senior engineers, and before school age he was enrolled in a long list of hobby classes, among them calligraphy, English, composition, table tennis and chess; his father took him to the Xuanwu District Children's Palace (宣武区少年宫) every Saturday morning for two hours of xiangqi.[18] After about two years he placed second in a Beijing junior event, entered the junior class of the Beijing Qiyuan (北京棋院), and from 1999 to 2001 won the national junior championship each year; in 2005, in the 16-year-old group, he won again and was promoted to Master (大师).[18] Wang has given a slightly different early timeline: in April 2013 he said he had learned to play at six, won his first national junior title in 1998 and three junior championships within the following eight years, and become a Master in 2005.[23] A 2018 profile, by contrast, says he began to learn at seven and dates his run of national junior titles from 1999.[5] The Asian Xiangqi Federation's results table records him as the youth individual winner at the 13th Asian Xiangqi Championship, held in Beijing in 2004.[24]

Wang studied information management at Peking University. He has said that he entered the university in 2009 and played little during his student years, and that he was still finishing his degree in 2013.[23] The Economic Observer's 2024 profile, and the long-form "deep dig" published the same year, date his admission to 2008, the latter describing a "chess winter camp" route that carried a rumoured discount of 50 to 65 points below the local admission line.[25][18] Accounts differ on when he graduated: the 2024 profiles say 2012, while Wang said in 2013 that he still expected to graduate that year.[18][23] By the middle of 2011 he was a starting player for Beijing Weikai Construction in the national league while about to enter his fourth undergraduate year; he had finished fourth in the 2010 national individual championship, and two years earlier had helped Beijing win the youth men's team title at the first National Mind Sports Games (全国智力运动会).[26]

In a 2013 interview Wang said that his given name means 天人合一—"the unity of heaven and man"—rather than "number one under heaven".[23] From early in his career he was known as the "Alien" (外星人); the nickname was in use by the time he won the national title in 2012, and the association's own reports used it by 2016 and 2018.[3][27][28]

First national title and the 2012 controversies

On 20 October 2012 Wang Tianyi drew with Wang Yang in the last round of the national men's individual championship, finishing with five wins and six draws, 16 points from eleven games, and taking the 47th edition of the title; he became the 16th men's national champion since 1956 and was promoted to Grandmaster (特级大师).[3] The same year he was the national league's top scorer, with 33 points from 22 games (12 wins, 9 draws, 1 loss), and his first major title had come at the Cailun Bamboo Sea Cup (蔡伦竹海杯), worth 120,000 yuan.[3]

His first controversy came in the same season. In September 2012 the Guangzhou Daily reported from the site of the 7th National Peasants' Games (全国农运会) that registered professionals had entered the supposedly amateur event under false names, in breach of its rules; Wang competed as "Wang Tianyi" (王天弈), a homophone of his real name, and won the men's rapid title, while his Beijing team-mate Wang Yuefei played as 王跃非 and other professionals used similar devices.[29] The results of the players who competed under false names were annulled; on 27 November 2012 Wang published an apology on Weibo saying that he deeply regretted the affair and would take it as a lesson, while a Xinhua commentary quoted in the same report described him as a "pawn" and argued that those who had arranged the entries should also be investigated.[30]

In November 2012 Sun Yongzheng, the 2011 national champion, posted lines from a detective drama that were widely read as insinuating that Wang had used software to cheat. Wang answered with a public ten-game challenge—"the time and place are yours to choose"—and with a second post saying that the accusations had a long history and that he would now confront them.[31] The proposed match was stopped by the China Qiyuan (中国棋院), and the two men instead met at the Mingshan Masters (决战名山大师赛) later that month, where Sun beat Wang in a blitz tie-break after two drawn games.[32] Interviewed by CCTV-5 on 8 November 2012, Wang denied using a telephone during games, said that he left the board at most once or twice, asked his critics to produce evidence, and predicted that the ten-game challenge would not take place.[33] In April 2013 he said of the episode that he had been impulsive, that a calmer approach would have been better, and that it was "perhaps the price of growing up"; in the same interview he acknowledged that he had been using chess software to assist his training since 2009.[23] The affair cost him two invitations to champions' events in 2013, but he won the Hanxin Cup (韩信杯) and the Zhouzhuang Cup (周庄杯) that spring, beating Hong Zhi and Jiang Chuan respectively in blitz play-offs, and said that his ambition had shifted from the rating No. 1 spot to a world championship.[23]

Rating dominance and record scores

The rating lists

The Chinese Xiangqi Association has published a national rating list since 1982, at first annually, then twice a year from 1984 and three times a year from 2019; the list is a standing feature of the professional game and a major determinant of a player's market value.[34][35] Wang Tianyi first reached No. 1 in the list published on 1 January 2014, which used the 31 December 2013 cutoff: his score rose from 2647 to 2665, while Xu Yinchuan, the previous leader, fell from 2683 to 2663.[6][36] Retrospectives of the rating system describe the change of guard as a two-point margin and the start of a reign that lasted through 2024.[37][34][38]

His published scores after that first list were 2675 in the second half of 2014,[39] 2697 in the first half of 2015,[40] and 2679 in the second half of 2015, six points ahead of the runner-up.[41] With the 31 December 2015 cutoff he reached 2712, breaking Jiang Chuan's previous all-time record of 2709, which had stood for five and a half years.[42][43][44] He then recorded 2710 in mid-2016,[45] 2693 at the start of 2017,[46] 2738 in mid-2018, his highest published score before 2021,[47] 2724 at the start of 2019,[48] and 2711 in mid-2019, thirteen points clear of Zheng Weitong.[49] In 2020 he held 2729 on the mid-year list,[50] then 2706 in January 2021 after a loss of thirty-one points,[51] 2731 in mid-2021,[52] and 2743 on the 30 September 2021 list.[53] The list with the 31 December 2021 cutoff gave him 2751—his first score above 2750, and two points ahead of Zheng Weitong—[54] and the lists of 30 September and 31 December 2022 both gave him 2773, eighteen points clear of his rival.[55][56]

The 2800 mark

On 11 May 2023 Wang Tianyi beat Sun Yiyang in the final of the Gaogang Cup (高港杯), and his live, in-competition rating passed 2800 for the first time, touching 2800.3—a figure calculated by a specialist account from the official baseline of 2773 and explicitly described as unofficial.[57][58][59] The official list with the 31 May 2023 cutoff, published under notice 象棋协字〔2023〕46号, gave him 2802, with Zheng Weitong second on 2754: the first official rating above 2800 in the history of the list, and a margin of 46 points.[60][7][14][61] His score had fallen back to 2783 by the 30 September 2023 list.[62][63]

The length of the reign

Because the lists appear only a few times a year, the length of his reign was reported as a running count that grew with each publication. Using season-years counted inclusively from 2014, contemporary accounts described it as five consecutive years in January 2018,[28] six in January 2019,[64] seven in 2020,[50][34] eight in 2021,[51][53][65] nine in 2021–22,[54][37] ten in mid-2023,[14][58] and eleven at the end of 2023 and in January 2024.[66][67] Wang himself said in 2017 that he had been ranked first since 2014.[68] One April 2025 piece, written after the association circulated a draft competition-points ranking method, called the rating system "cancelled" after 43 years and dated Wang's reign to 2014–2024.[38]

National individual championships

Wang Tianyi's four national individual titles were won in 2012, 2016, 2019 and 2023.[8][9][12] At the 2016 (51st) edition he beat Zhao Xinxin in a semifinal that went to blitz tie-breaks, equalising the two-game match with a mid-game win in the second game and then defending a difficult endgame to draw the first blitz game and win the second. He went on to take the title.[27][8] On 1 December 2019 he beat Wang Yang with Black in the slow game of the final, winning a horse-and-cannon endgame in which he held more pawns; the victory was his third national title, after 2012 and 2016, and carried qualification for the next World Championship and for the million-yuan World Chess King tournament.[8][69] In November 2020, with the World Chess King event postponed, he entered the Shanghai championship seeking a fourth title.[70]

The 2023 national individual championship—the "Guizhou Wangdao Liquor Cup" (贵州王道酒业杯)—was held in Nansha, Guangzhou, with the men's Group B from 30 April to 2 May and the men's Group A and the women's event from 2 to 7 May.[72][9] Group A was a 64-player knockout in which the first three rounds were single games and the quarter-finals and later rounds were two-game matches with colours reversed; ties were settled by blitz and super-blitz games, and, if everything remained level, by a single additional game in which Black needed only a draw.[73] Thirty-five players came up from Group B under the referees' supplementary rules.[74] The final was scheduled as two games on a single day, 7 May, at 09:00 and 15:00.[75]

Wang's path to the final ran through Cui Ge (round 1), Lu Weitao (round 2), Wang Yang (round 3, decided in the second super-blitz game), Nie Tiewen (round 4, one win and one draw), and Wang Yuhang (semi-final, won twice).[76][77][78] His last-16 tie against Wang Yang went the full four games: after three drawn games, Wang won the second super-blitz game with Red.[79][80] In the semi-final's second game, already a pawn up and needing only a draw, he played on because a draw would have cost him close to five rating points, and eventually won the ending.[81][78] Meng Chen, who had come through Group B and then beaten Yin Sheng, Cheng Ming, Hong Zhi, Cao Yanlei and Zhao Xinxin, reached the final for the first time in his career.[71][81]

In the first game of the final, on the morning of 7 May, Wang Tianyi had the red pieces. The game developed into a screen-horses formation (屏风马) for Wang against Meng Chen's central cannon (中炮), with Black's rooks and horses active but Red's position solid. After Black withdrew the central cannon to regroup, Wang suddenly moved his rook sideways and offered an exchange of rooks while leaving a horse on the third file as bait. According to the association's report, exchanging rooks would have left Meng slightly worse with a long defence ahead, while capturing the horse meant withstanding a violent attack. Meng thought for more than ten minutes and captured the horse. Wang then advanced a cannon to Black's back rank and captured an elephant, followed with a quiet move that offered an advisor to keep the attack alive, and forced Meng to give back a piece; short of an elephant and a pawn, Meng resigned.[71][82][83] In the afternoon's second game Meng Chen had the first move and pressed, but after the rooks came off, Wang defended precisely with horse, cannon and pawn and made the draw he needed; he won the match by one win and one draw and took his fourth national title.[9][71]

The decisive game can be replayed below (Wang Tianyi, Red, won; Black resigned):[84][85]

The turning point is 18.R3=2. Reviews of the game held that Black's correct defence was to capture the offered rook with 18...r8+2, accepting a slightly inferior but defensible position, and that taking the horse with 18...r8=7 was the decisive mistake: Wang's 20.-C+5 took the elephant on Black's back rank and the rook-and-two-cannons attack became overwhelming. Meng Chen said afterwards that exchanging rooks would have calmed the position and that he had not wanted to accept it.[86][87][88][89] In his own review Wang said that he had calculated the sacrifice in under ten minutes, that he chose the line because of Meng Chen's uncompromising style—for such a player, capturing the offered horse was more likely than a passive exchange—and that although the software verdict is that the capture is slightly worse, it remains a defensible choice for a human player.[90][91] Later reviews judged Meng's king advance, in place of a defensive advisor move, to be risky as well.[88][82] The second game, drawn in the afternoon, was a controlled defence in which Wang, after the exchange of rooks, neutralised Meng's extra file-pawn and steered the game to a horse-and-cannon ending that was agreed drawn.[71][92]

With four titles Wang joined Yang Guanlin, Li Laiqun and Zhao Guorong, behind only Hu Ronghua (fourteen titles), Xu Yinchuan (six) and Lü Qin (five).[71][12]

International record

World championships

Wang won the men's individual title at the 13th World Xiangqi Championship, held at Huidong, Huizhou, Guangdong, from 22 to 26 October 2013. Playing for China on his championship debut, he finished with seven wins and two draws (16 points) over nine rounds, drawing the last round as Red with Huang Chunlong—enough, once his team-mate Sun Yongzheng had also drawn, to take the title; he and Sun took the men's team gold as well, the team placings being computed from the two players' individual scores. The reports described him as China's seventh men's world champion and noted that it was his fourth major title of the year.[93][94][95][96] The World Xiangqi Federation's own results lists record the 13th edition as individual first place Wang Tianyi, second Sun Yongzheng; team first China (Wang Tianyi, Sun Yongzheng), second Macau, third Vietnam.[97][98][99]

At the 15th World Championship in Manila, played from 13 to 19 November 2017, Wang took his second world title after finishing level with Zheng Weitong on 15 points and winning on opponent score, 107 to 105; he had needed a win in the last round and got it when his opponent, Chan Chun-kit of Hong Kong, blundered a piece in a drawn endgame.[100][101] The two Chinese players also took the men's team gold.[98][99]

The 17th World Championship was held at Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, from 23 to 29 October 2022.[102] Wang beat Hong Kong's Feng Jiajun in the final—a slow game in which, after the exchange of rooks, he won a horse-and-cannon endgame with an extra pawn—for his third world individual title, after 2013 and 2017;[103][104][105] with Wang Kuo he was also a member of the Chinese men's team that lost the team gold for the first time in the championship's history, Vietnam taking first place.[102][105] By the WXF's count, only Lü Qin (five) and Xu Yinchuan (three) had won as many or more men's world individual titles; Wang's third placed him alongside Xu Yinchuan.[10]

Asian championships

Wang's first international title on record is the youth individual gold at the 13th Asian Xiangqi Championship in Beijing in 2004, ahead of Hong Kong's Wang Haochang, with Vietnam third and West Malaysia fourth.[24] The Asian individual championship is a separate series from the older team championship; in 2014 the Asian federation decided to add an individual open event so that more players could compete internationally, and the 17th edition was staged in Singapore from 16 to 20 November 2015 with a six-round preliminary phase followed by a title final between the top two.[106][11][107] Wang and Zheng Weitong drew with each other in the preliminaries and both reached the final, where Wang, playing Black, won a horse-and-cannon endgame with two pawns against Zheng's two horses and one advisor; the game ended on move 186.[11][108][109] The win completed what the Chinese press called the "Grand Slam" of world, Asian and national titles, and was his eighth title of the 2015 season.[108][110] At the 19th Asian individual championship in Kuala Lumpur in September 2019 he reached the final again, beating Feng Jiajun in the last preliminary round while Zheng Weitong beat Liu Zijian, but lost the final to Zheng in 72 moves and finished second.[111][112][13]

Other international events

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wang won the first World Xiangqi Online Chess King tournament, an online event organised by the Chinese association in April 2020; in the final he beat Xu Chao by one win and one draw, the first game being decided when Xu Chao lost on time from a good position.[113][114] The final's stream drew a peak of 3.496 million concurrent viewers.[114] A retrospective account says that Wang won the second Chuhe Hanjie World Chess King match (楚河汉界世界棋王赛), a single-game event in Xingyang in October 2018 in which he faced Xu Chao for a 1,000,000-yuan winner's prize.[115][116]

Other major titles

Wang Tianyi's non-championship record includes the Gaogang Cup, which he won in four of his first five appearances (2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018); the association's account of the 2018 run notes that he won five of his first six games and drew the last round to finish first.[117] In the 6th Gaogang Cup in May 2019 he lost the final to Meng Chen, who sprang a prepared novelty on move 21; Wang, in time trouble, resigned on move 31.[118][119] He won the Country Garden Cup (碧桂园杯) in 2015 and again in 2017, the second time taking 700,000 yuan, and was runner-up in the 8th edition in December 2019, losing the final to Zheng Weitong after the four regulation games were drawn and the extra game went against him.[120][121][122] He won the Hanxin Cup in 2013, 2015 and again in December 2018,[23][121][123] the Zhouzhuang Cup in 2013 and 2015,[23][121] the Longwan Cup (龙湾杯) elite rapid tournament in June 2019 after three runner-up finishes the previous month,[124] and the professional men's group of the Yang Guanlin Cup (杨官璘杯) in September 2018.[125] He also won back-to-back Pengcheng Cup (鹏城杯) titles in 2023, the second of them sealed with a win over Shen Peng on 1 March 2023, days after leading Hangzhou to the league title.[126][127] A 2015 year-end review credited him with nine titles in 2015, including the Asian championship and the league's scoring title.[121]

League and club career

Wang came into the professional league as a university student, playing for Beijing Weikai Construction from 2009; for most of his career he remained a free agent rather than a contracted player of a provincial team, and a 2018 profile counted eight league seasons with five different clubs—"an oddity" in a sport of institutional squads.[26][5] He transferred from Beijing to Inner Mongolia for the 2014 season;[19][39] in 2015 he signed with Guangxi Cross-century for the league, where he was part of a squad described as the most expensive assembled to that date, and with Chengdu for the national team championship, the individual championship and the Mind Sports Games.[19][128] The rating list of 31 December 2015 registered him with Sichuan, and the mid-2016 list with Hangzhou.[42][45] He also missed an entire league season while the wage dispute was pending; accounts date it to 2016 or 2017.[129][18]

From 2017 Wang was a contracted player of the Hangzhou branch of the China Qiyuan (中国棋院杭州分院), and in March 2018 he formally became an athlete of the branch, describing the change as going "from contract worker to regular employee".[5][2] In the 2022 league season, completed in February 2023, his Hangzhou Environment Group team beat Henan in the final for the club's first title—its previous best had been second place in 2019—and Wang, in his first season as coach-captain, took both the regular-season and play-off MVP awards while playing every round with one loss.[130][131][132]

On 17 October 2014 Wang signed a three-year contract with Guangxi Cross-century running to the end of the 2017 league season.[133] The club won the 2015 league title three rounds early with a squad assembled at great expense, but did not enter the league in 2016, and from November 2015 the players' game fees, prize money and salaries stopped being paid.[128][133] On 15 June 2016 Wang and Wang Yuefei published a joint statement appointing three named lawyers to bring claims for wages and bonuses; the case was filed at the Nanning Qingxiu District Court on 2 June 2016, in what the reporting called China's first player wage claim in the chess disciplines.[128][133] There was also a registration conflict: the Guangxi sports authorities registered the players unilaterally, the association ruled the registration invalid, and Wang played for Hangzhou.[133] The first-instance judgment of 10 September 2017 went in the players' favour; on 25 October 2018 the Nanning Intermediate People's Court upheld it on appeal, awarding Wang Tianyi and Wang Yuefei slightly more than 1,000,000 yuan between them. As of mid-November 2018 the money had not been paid and the players had applied for enforcement.[129]

Rivalry with Zheng Weitong and the cancelled ten-game match

For most of Wang's reign his principal rival was Zheng Weitong, a Tsinghua University student whose ratings trailed his by a narrow margin through the late 2010s and early 2020s; the press framed the pair as xiangqi's "two stars" and, playing on their universities, as "Peking University versus Tsinghua".[19][20] Their rivalry produced a series of title-deciding games: Wang's opponent-score win over Zheng at the 2017 World Championship,[100] Zheng's victory over Wang in the 2019 Country Garden Cup final,[122] and the finals of the 2015 and 2019 Asian individual championships, which they split.[108][112] In February 2021 Wang beat Zheng in a marathon Shenzhen Spring Festival Cup (贺岁杯) final that ran to seven games plus extra blitz games, taking 80,000 yuan.[20]

A ten-game exhibition match between the two was announced for January 2023 with a prize structure of 500,000 yuan for the winner, 100,000 for the loser and 200,000 each in the event of a draw, to be streamed on a pay-per-view basis at ten yuan per game.[134][135] Wang said before the match that he would not play without money, that the match interested him as a test against his strongest rival, that Zheng's opening play was unusual, and that he did not fear losing: "if you are afraid of losing, don't play".[136] The match collapsed on the eve of its start. The promoter, Liu Xiao, published an account accusing Zheng's side of seeking a postponement, demanding a contract, repeatedly changing its terms and asking for testing in a state anti-cheating chamber; Zheng called the promoter's statement "a distortion and a concealment of the facts" and reserved his legal rights.[134][135] Wang himself published a piece addressed to Zheng accusing him of last-minute demands and ending with the line "why I have been No. 1 for ten years and you No. 2 for nine—I play chess with my heart, you play hard to win", for which he later apologised.[137][135] Zheng replied that he was willing to play the match at any time, with or without prize money and with free viewing.[137] Reporting attributed the collapse to the absence of a signed contract before the event was promoted.[135]

The rivalry continued on the board. At the second stage of the 2023 Asian Games selection event the two drew on 31 May.[138][139]

Playing style and self-assessment

Wang Tianyi was known for uncompromising attacking play; a 2025 report on his trial described his style as "violent chess" (暴力象棋). His willingness to play on for a win in drawn-looking positions appears in his own account of the 2023 semi-final, where he declined a draw that would have cost him rating points.[16][81][78] Asked in September 2017 how he had stayed at No. 1, he said he had been first since 2014 and put it down to effort—training, preparation, taking every game seriously. The leading players were close to each other, he added; holding first place was genuinely difficult, he did not rate the ranking highly himself, someone would eventually overtake him, "a natural law of sport", and there was no secret beyond controlling what he could control.[68] In April 2013, at the start of his national career, he said his goal had shifted from the rating No. 1 spot to winning a world championship.[23] In a livestream two days after winning his third national title in December 2019 he described himself as much calmer than seven years earlier and said he would never again attack opponents by name; he also spoke about the anti-cheating screening introduced at the championship and his willingness to cooperate with it, saying that fair and open conditions favoured him.[140] In his own review of the 2023 final he said he had chosen the rook offer because Meng Chen's uncompromising style made the capture more likely than a passive exchange, and that he had prepared the follow-up.[90][91] After winning his third world title in 2022 he spoke about the improving strength of overseas players and the growth of the game abroad.[104]

Asian Games selection and withdrawal

Wang took part in the selection process for the xiangqi events at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. After the second stage of selection in June 2023 he finished third behind Zheng Weitong and Zhao Xinxin, a placing that qualified him for the mixed team event rather than the individual competition.[139][141] On 10 August 2023 the Chinese Xiangqi Association published a notice stating that Wang Tianyi had applied to withdraw from the Asian Games xiangqi team "for personal reasons" (个人原因), and that the fourth-placed Wang Yang would be substituted in accordance with the selection rules; the notice was open for public comment from 10 to 17 August.[141] Press and commentary accounts described the withdrawal differently, as due to illness or health reasons; in a livestream later that year Wang said it had nothing to do with the recording affair.[142][143][35][17]

Wang streamed xiangqi on Huya from room 822251 under the title "Grandmaster Wang Tianyi's livestream room"; a 63-minute stream recorded on 2 December 2019, two days after his third national title, shows him replaying and explaining his championship games.[21][140] He signed his Huya contract in 2017 and renewed it in 2019 for five years; he described the base salary only as "not six figures, not eight figures".[22] Paid instructional courses sold through the Xiangqi Micro-Classroom platform (象棋微学堂) were reported to have reached 24,744 purchasers for his most popular course, priced at 120 yuan and discounted to 29.9 yuan, and his 2023 prize money was counted by one outlet at more than 540,000 yuan; a commentary column estimated his peak annual income at "about a million" yuan.[22][144] In March 2021 he appeared alongside Hu Ronghua in a People's Daily sports programme pairing two generations of players, where he spoke about xiangqi's growth abroad and about the sport's fans.[145]

"Recording gate" case (2023–2026)

The recordings

Around April 2023 recordings of telephone calls began to circulate on Chinese platforms; the best-known version was about twelve minutes long, and the official account describes them collectively as several calls whose speakers discussed buying games, selling games, manipulating competitions and software cheating, with Wang Tianyi's name repeatedly mentioned.[146][147][148] The call that became the public centre of the affair was a conversation between Grandmasters Wang Yuefei and Hao Jichao; according to later reporting, Hong Zhi supplied a complete recording of more than ninety minutes to the investigation, and in October 2023 Dang Fei submitted "more than ninety minutes of the original recording and related evidence" with a real-name report to the discipline-inspection authority.[148][149][150] The public file was never a single canonical original: contemporary commentators and Wang himself described the best-known cut as spliced, and further segments were released later in 2023.[151][152][153] On 18 October 2023 Liu Dahua also filed a real-name report against Guo Liping, an association official, over the handling of the affair.[2][154][142]

Response and investigation

On 8 October 2023 Wang Tianyi responded to the affair in a livestream. He said the recording did not contain his voice but did mention him, and that the popular ten-minute file had been cut up and given captions that steered how it was read. The accusations against him, he said, were match manipulation and cheating; he denied both, argued that he had no reason to cheat after ten years at No. 1, said he would not attempt to prove his innocence because nobody can prove a negative, and called on his accusers to bring evidence to the authorities. He compared tacit draws to a mutual draw in football but denied buying and selling games.[153][142][155] The association opened its own investigation in July 2023.[35] On 23 April 2024, his 35th birthday, Wang was taken away by Hangzhou police officers investigating economic crimes, on suspicion of bribery by a non-state functionary (非国家工作人员受贿); the news became public in June 2024.[2][25] In August 2024 the Economic Observer reported that the Hangzhou procuratorate had approved his arrest, and that the games allegedly bought by Wang Tianyi and Wang Yuefei were worth more than 800,000 yuan in total.[156][157]

Lifetime ban

On 19 September 2024 the Chinese Xiangqi Association announced that its investigation had found that Wang Tianyi, Wang Yuefei and other athletes had, over a long period and at high frequency, bought and sold games and manipulated competitions. The association banned both men for life, revoked all technical titles it had awarded them, including Grandmaster, and barred them from all events and activities organised or authorised by the association and its member units.[15][158][4] The announcement, reported by state media and by outlets in Hong Kong, ended a career in which Wang had been the sport's leading figure for a decade.[4][159][35]

Criminal case, sentence and apology

The Chinese-language apology letter headed 致歉信 and signed Wang Tianyi, dictated, October 2025, Hangzhou
The dictated apology letter Wang published on 21 October 2025.[1]

In April 2025 the Economic Observer reported that six grandmasters—Wang Tianyi, Zhao Xinxin, Hong Zhi, Xu Chao, Xie Jing and Wang Yuefei—had been indicted in the Hangzhou Shangcheng District People's Court on charges of giving and accepting bribes as non-state functionaries; Xu Chao, Xie Jing and Wang Yuefei had by then pleaded guilty, while Wang Tianyi, Zhao Xinxin and Hong Zhi had not.[160] At the first-instance hearing on 9 May 2025 the prosecution put the case against Wang at 22 counts of paying bribes totalling 942,000 yuan—19 of them through Wang Yuefei—and two counts of accepting bribes totalling 116,000 yuan for deliberately losing games, and recommended a combined sentence of two years and nine months plus a fine; he confirmed in court that he accepted the charges and the recommendation.[161] The court delivered its verdict on 24 September 2025: Hong Zhi, the only defendant who had not pleaded guilty, received two years and seven months, and the other five received sentences close to the prosecution's recommendations.[16][17][162] Wang repented in court and admitted receiving extra payments from sponsors to maintain his ranking.[16][163] On 21 October 2025 he published a dictated apology letter, his first public statement on the criminal case, saying that his conduct had crossed legal and moral lines, that he had deceived himself into thinking it was an industry practice, that he had let go of the "number one under heaven" obsession, and that he had seen "the complexity of human nature".[1][164][165]

Aftermath

The case widened after Wang's own sanction. On 12 January 2025 the Chinese Xiangqi Association announced punishments for 41 people for buying and selling games through bribery, including lifetime bans for Zhao Xinxin, Wang Yang and Zheng Weitong and a suspension for Wang Kuo. Official statements put the violations in the case as a whole between 2012 and 2023 and described concealment methods that included cash taken to venues and payments routed through relatives' accounts.[166][167][35][168] On 13 April 2026 the association announced a third batch of punishments: lifetime bans for Hong Zhi, Xie Jing and Xu Chao, eight years for Shen Peng, five for Jiang Chuan and two for Xu Chongfeng.[169][170][171]

Public image and reception

During his playing career Wang Tianyi was the most visible figure in Chinese xiangqi.[35][160] By the end of 2015 he had been named the year's best player by the specialist press, which counted nine titles that season—including the Asian championship, the Gaogang Cup, the league and its scoring title—and a new rating record of 2712, and called him the hottest player of recent years.[121] His 2023 season, in which he regained the national title and set the 2800 record, was recorded in year-in-review lists as the year's outstanding individual performance,[67] and his matches were watched by millions online, with a peak of 3.496 million concurrent viewers for the 2020 online world final.[114] Reports written after his fall described him as the sport's "absolute overlord" for the previous decade and as a rare talent.[35][144] The same commentary noted the difficulty of the sport's professional economy, estimating his peak annual income at about a million yuan against 400,000–500,000 yuan for the No. 2 player.[144]

Playing record and archives

The Dongping Xiangqi website (东萍象棋网) maintains an online archive of Wang Tianyi's games, running from junior and league play in 2004–05 through the professional events of his career to 2024, when it records a three-game exhibition against Lü Qin and a charity exhibition in Wuwei, Anhui.[172] The 2023 national championship alone is archived as a 152-game event collection that includes the scores of his six matches in the event.[85][84]
