The '''elbow horse''' (simplified Chinese: 卧槽马; traditional Chinese: 臥槽馬; pinyin: ''wò cáo mǎ'') is an attacking horse placement in xiangqi. In its modern form, the horse stands just outside the opposing palace, one point in front of either original elephant position. It can check the general on the central point of the back rank and cooperate with other pieces to restrict escape, win material, or deliver checkmate. Jim Png Hau Cheng describes it as one of xiangqi’s most important attacking positions.<ref name="ref-1">Jim Png Hau Cheng. ''A Beginner’s Companion to Xiangqi''. “Elbow Horse Attack/Checkmate”, pp. 91–93.</ref>

An older use of the name places the horse one file farther toward the edge of the board, in front of an original horse position. This usage appears in the opening literature, including ''Secrets Inside the Orange'' (橘中秘, 1632). This older location is the position of the golden hooked horse (金钩马).<ref name="ref-2">Jim Png Hau Cheng (2017). ''A Lexicon of Xiangqi/Chinese Chess Terms in English''. Taipei: Jim Png Hau Cheng. “Elbow Files”, “Elbow Horse”, and “Elbow Horse Checkmate”, pp. 190–191. ISBN 978-957-43-4707-0.</ref>

The motif appears in classical compositions, instructional literature, and tournament play. It also occurs in xiangqi proverbs and personal recollections, and has been used figuratively in sports writing and television drama to describe a threatening or concealed force.

== Terminology and history ==

=== Chinese and English names ===

The Chinese name combines ''wò'' (卧, “lie down” or “recline”), ''cáo'' (槽, “trough”), and ''mǎ'' (马, “horse”).<ref name="ref-3">Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大學). “[https://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/lexi-mf/search.php?word=%E6%A7%BD Multi-function Chinese Character Database: lie down; trough]” [漢語多功能字庫：臥、槽]. In this explanation, the older elbow horse stands beside the opponent’s trough.<ref name="ref-4">Kirin Descendant, pen name (麒麟传人) (10 July 2023). “[https://www.xqmuseum.cn/articledetail/204.html Elbow horse]” [卧槽马]. Shenzhen Qiguo Xiangqi Museum (深圳市棋国象棋博物馆), reposted from Zhihu (知乎). explanation of the name; attacking uses; discussion of 独鹿鸣泽.</ref>

An alternative explanation in the essay “Language knowledge in xiangqi” derives the expression from ''wō cháo'' (窝巢, “nest”), an image for the general’s home. It proposes that the term arose through wordplay involving the sounds and order of these characters.<ref name="ref-5">Little Writers editorial site (小作家网) (30 June 2019). “[https://www.littlewriter.org/mobile/news/index/id/1811.html Language knowledge in xiangqi]” [象棋里的语文知识]. Little Writers (小作家网).</ref>

The modern position lies on the third or seventh file, known as the “elbow files”. Png attributes this designation to the Asian Xiangqi Federation.<ref name="ref-2" />

In his ''Lexicon of Xiangqi/Chinese Chess Terms in English'', Png uses “elbow horse” and records Felix Tan’s proposed alternative, “moat horse”. Tan’s analogy refers to the moat or other defenses around a palace: an enemy able to maneuver cavalry and build stables outside it poses a serious threat.<ref name="ref-2" /> “Elbow” is not a literal translation of the Chinese name.<ref name="ref-3" />

=== Classical usage ===

Png distinguishes the modern elbow horse on the third or seventh file from an older usage on the second or eighth file of the same rank. The latter corresponds to the golden hooked horse (金钩马), one file farther from the palace.<ref name="ref-2" /><ref name="ref-6">Jim Png Hau Cheng. “[https://www.xqinenglish.com/index.php?Itemid=522&catid=166&id=138%3Abk05horse01&lang=en&option=com_content&view=article Basic Kills involving the Horse Introduction]”. Xiangqi in English. Horse-position terminology.</ref>

''Elegant Pastime'' (适情雅趣), a collection associated with 1570, contains compositions using the modern elbow-horse position. Xu Zhi (徐芝) is credited as its compiler and Chen Xueli (陈学礼) as its editor. In “Lowering the Reins to Rescue the Lord” and “Building a Bridge upon Meeting Water”, the horse’s early check initiates a longer combination in which it later takes on a different role.<ref name="ref-7">Wu Qiangsheng (伍强胜); reviewed by Chen Xiaokun (陈孝坤) and Zhu Hezhou (朱鹤洲) (2022). Zhu Jinzhen’s (朱晋桢) ''Secrets Inside the Orange'' preserves the older meaning in a line headed “Same-direction cannons, upright chariot, elbow horse” (顺炮直车卧槽马). Black’s horse advances to the point in front of Red’s original horse position, then withdraws to a palace corner with check. In ''Secrets Inside the Orange'', 8... h3+2 establishes the older elbow-horse position. The later 10... h2-4 gives check from a palace corner.<ref name="ref-9" />

The older placement also appears in a free-hand-cannon line (信手炮) attributed to ''Unbeatable Upon Leaving the Cave'' (自出洞来无敌手). Red’s horse reaches the point in front of Black’s original horse position, later gives check from a palace corner, and finally serves as a cannon screen.<ref name="ref-10">Ourgame editorial archive (联众) (10 April 2003). “[https://www.ourgame.com/news/db/52/51159.html Detailed xiangqi terminology: free-hand cannon]” [象棋术语精解：信手炮]. == Language, literature and cultural reception ==

=== Sayings and literary allusions ===

The saying “连车重炮卧槽马，城里老将挨死打” (“Linked chariots, stacked cannons, an elbow horse—the general in the city takes a mortal beating”) groups the elbow horse with other coordinated attacking formations.<ref name="ref-11">Kxue dictionary compilation (快学网词典) (1 December 2012). “[https://cidian.kxue.com/help/2012/1201/510857.html Xiangqi proverbs]” [象棋谚语]. Kxue (快学网).</ref>

Tournament commentary also draws on literary images of horses. A 2014 report of Zhao Xinxin’s (赵鑫鑫) game against Zheng Weitong (郑惟桐) describes the decisive horse maneuver with “the horse raced as swiftly as Dilu” (马作的卢飞快). The line comes from Xin Qiji’s (辛弃疾) “Breaking the Battle Formation: A Heroic Lyric Sent to Chen Tongfu” (破阵子·为陈同甫赋壮词以寄之), transferring an image of mounted battle to the chessboard.<ref name="ref-12">Xiangqi Prince (象棋王子) (25 September 2014). “[https://m.gdchess.com/Show.asp?id=15770 Yang Guanlin Cup, round three]” [杨官璘杯3轮：刺刀见红 许银川蒋川王天一郑惟桐领先]. Classical problem titles give the horse’s maneuvers a narrative form. In later annotations to ''Elegant Pastime'', “Lowering the Reins to Rescue the Lord” takes its meaning from a horse’s return to protect its own general; in “Building a Bridge upon Meeting Water”, the horse forms the “bridge” by becoming a cannon screen.<ref name="ref-8" />

=== Recollections of play ===

Biographical accounts place the term among the named tactics learned in childhood. A profile of Zhao Guorong (赵国荣) recalls his learning the elbow horse before school, while a profile of Zang Ruyi (臧如意) describes his early exposure to tactical vocabulary through Beijing teahouse play.<ref name="ref-14">Football and Sports (足球·劲体育) (15 June 2005). “[https://sports.sina.com.cn/go/p/2005-06-15/11131614754.shtml Zhao Guorong’s many sporting and board-game interests]” [乒乓棋牌两不误 赵国荣18般牌艺样样精通]. In a 2023 ''Yangcheng Evening News'' essay, Chen Jicheng (陈积成) recalls learning the motif from a book by Yang Guanlin (杨官璘) and later cycling across the city to watch the Five Rams Cup.<ref name="ref-16">Chen Jicheng (陈积成) (15 January 2023). “[https://ep.ycwb.com/epaper/ycwb/html/2023-01/15/content_4_549476.htm Cycling across the cold city to watch the Five Rams Cup]” [从城东到城西，寒风中骑车穿城去看“五羊杯”]. A 2012 ''United Daily News'' newsletter essay by the writer Five Trees (五木) recounts a game against a blind opponent using a tactile board. The narrator expects an H8+7 elbow-horse attack to succeed, but the opponent captures the horse with a retreating cannon. The missed defense provides the story’s reversal.<ref name="ref-17">Five Trees, pen name (五木) (20 April 2012). “[https://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/PIC0005/214909/web/ The extraordinarily skilled blind chess player]” [不悶鍋事件／神乎其技的盲棋手]. A 2006 ''Shanghai Youth Daily'' football article compares an attacking midfield arrangement to an elbow horse, using the image of a piece stationed close to the opponent’s vulnerable center.<ref name="ref-18">Shanghai Youth Daily (上海青年报) (2 June 2006). “[https://sports.sina.com.cn/s/2006-06-02/1130876511s.shtml Fine wine conceals a killing threat]” [葡萄美酒暗藏杀机]. == Tactical role ==

=== Attack and coordination ===

Png treats the elbow horse as a fundamental attacking position, describing elbow-horse checkmate as a technique in which the horse restricts the general while another piece delivers mate.<ref name="ref-2" /> A modern elbow horse stands on the second rank from the opponent’s back edge, immediately outside the palace. With its inward leg unobstructed, it attacks the central points on the palace’s front and back ranks, but not the central point on the middle rank. A mating attack therefore requires other pieces to close the general’s remaining escape routes.<ref name="ref-20">GameTea editorial staff (游戏茶苑) (20 April 2012). “[https://www.gametea.com/news/201204/2981.html Basic xiangqi mating methods: elbow horse]” [象棋基本杀法—卧槽马]. A chariot can cut off the general’s escape along the middle rank, while the horse checks from the side. The horse may also give check and simultaneously attack a chariot on an outside file.<ref name="ref-4" /> In horse-and-cannon combinations, it can force the general onto an exposed line or later become a cannon screen.<ref name="ref-8" /><ref name="ref-10" /> An elbow horse can also cooperate with a second horse that controls an escape route, as in the pattern “two horses drinking at the spring” (双马饮泉).<ref name="ref-22">GameTea instructional archive (游戏茶苑). “[https://www.gametea.net/ask/201811/7744.html Winning techniques in Chinese xiangqi: improvement]” [中国象棋游戏必胜技巧有哪些？---提高篇]. GameTea (游戏茶苑).</ref>

The horse need not remain on the elbow-horse point throughout an attack. Moving between attacking positions can uncover checks by another piece and win material.<ref name="ref-1" />

=== Defense ===

Defenses include preventing the horse’s entry, blocking its checking leg, capturing or exchanging it, moving the general, and removing its supporting pieces. The leg used to enter the elbow-horse position differs from the leg used to check once there. An advisor on a palace corner can obstruct an approach from that direction, but it cannot occupy the point directly between an established elbow horse and the middle rank of the palace. A chariot or cannon can block that checking leg, although an interposition may expose the defender to another threat.<ref name="ref-25" />

The advanced horse can itself become a target. === Lowering the Reins to Rescue the Lord ===

Problem 24 of ''Elegant Pastime'', “Lowering the Reins to Rescue the Lord” (垂缰救主), begins with the elbow-horse check 1. H2+3, driving Black’s general off the central file. The combination develops through two horses: one removes a central pawn, while the other eventually captures an advisor and returns to shield Red’s general. This releases the chariot to give check along the back rank.<ref name="ref-8" />

23. H4-6 shields Red’s general. After Black’s reply, 24. R7+8 gives check with the released chariot.<ref name="ref-8" />

=== Building a Bridge upon Meeting Water ===

In problem 45, “Building a Bridge upon Meeting Water” (遇水叠桥), 2. H2+3 establishes an elbow-horse check early in the attack. Horse-and-cannon cooperation wins a chariot, and a later chariot sacrifice redirects a defender. The horse then circles back to become the screen for the final cannon check. The mate is completed by 15. H2-4.<ref name="ref-8" />

The horse’s final position supplies the cannon screen described as a “bridge” in the annotation.<ref name="ref-8" />

Another problem, “Lone Deer Calling in the Marsh” (独鹿鸣泽), contrasts an elbow-horse approach with a palace-corner sacrifice. Its solution begins 1. H8+6, after which Black’s advisor captures the horse. Chariot and cannon attacks then exploit the changed arrangement.<ref name="ref-8" /><ref name="ref-4" />

=== Horse-and-pawn ending ===

Ending 28 in ''New Compilation from the Chess World'' uses the elbow horse to restrict the elephants while Black’s general stands on the central point of the palace’s middle rank, outside the horse’s attack. The annotation describes waiting for the elephants’ movement to become obstructed, then withdrawing the horse so that the pawn can advance. The line concludes with a winning evaluation for Red.<ref name="ref-21" />

The 2019 national final between Wang Yang, playing Red, and Wang Tianyi, playing Black, includes elbow-horse incursions by both sides. Red gives check with 13. H6+7, but after a delay in bringing up support, Black attacks the horse with 14... c8-5 and it withdraws. Black later establishes an elbow horse with 33... h5+7; Red returns to the post with 43. Wang Yang–Wang Tianyi, 2019 national final. Black’s 14... c8-5 attacks the advanced horse.<ref name="ref-29" />

The motif can influence play through an unexecuted threat. In the 2019 Gaogang Cup final, Meng Chen (孟辰) developed his other horse instead of immediately giving the expected elbow-horse check against Wang Tianyi. A cannon committed to defense became vulnerable to a chariot maneuver, and Wang resigned with material still equal.<ref name="ref-30">Daily Xiangqi (天天象棋) (25 May 2019). “[https://sports.sina.com.cn/go/2019-05-25/doc-ihvhiqay1243409.shtml Meng Chen defeats Wang Tianyi to win the Gaogang Cup]” [高港杯象棋青年大师赛战罢 孟辰胜王天一夺冠]. Material gained through the motif does not always determine the result. Tang Dan won material with horse-and-cannon threats against Wang Yang in the 2011 Dadi Cup but lost on time. In the veterans’ group of the 2026 Five Rams Cup, Yu Youhua (于幼华) used the elbow horse to win a major piece against Liu Dahua (柳大华), then blundered and lost.<ref name="ref-32">Sina Sports (新浪体育) (11 February 2011). “[https://sports.sina.com.cn/go/2011-02-11/18345446539.shtml Dadi Cup: Wang Tianyi wins unbeaten]” [大地杯王天一不败战绩夺冠 郑惟桐亚军汪洋季军].
